CHAPTER 6

Letting Your Puppy Know His Boundaries

Puppy training can be intense ... Especially if you go the wrong way about it. For starters, never leave your new puppy alone when you're not home unless you have a fenced yard.

However, if you are at home, it is fair to expect your trained puppy to stay near the door, regardless of the lure of diversion. Start by letting him know what his boundaries are.

Take a mason's cotton twin to rot over a period of time and use that length to generalize the lesson in the given region. Enable an area between 100 to 200 feet around the building.

Place the twin at nose height around the room, about six inches off the ground.

It's really important that the puppy doesn't equate his owner with the surprise when he crosses the barrier.

Also, shock the puppy even as it drives high towards a strong obstacle, like a fellow puppy, a jogger or cars.

Bring your dog on a quick lead and stroll around the borders. Enable him to go up and smell it. Smear it with bacon grate, if possible, to attract his attention. When he investigates, approach him and compliment him and touch him, so he gets excited and then goes into the house with him.

Give him a treat once, according to what he likes most. Repeat this in many places across the entire yard, so he knows the boundary and his relationship with the owner of the yard is good. There are no shocks in this process at all. You want him with you to be very relaxed.

First, place the puppy on a long lead and pinch it on a collar and set the help on the outside of the border to maintain a sociable puppy. Enable your puppy to touch at full speed; and then give a quick snap action to your puppy just before it hits the white line, and then run away.

Offer him a play session when your puppy catches up. Your secretary has run up to you with your annoying puppy. Then, the dog gets in touch with this dog and plays with it. Repeat this exercise in other areas around the border the following days so that it generalizes the lesson to the entire perimeter.

After some weeks, let the puppy outside watch him when you are still indoors. Then your assistant jogs with, hopefully, another puppy and if your guy wants to leave, run out and say "out." However, if the puppy shows patience, step back, praise, so the assistant is in the boundary, so that the puppies can play.

As they play, take the long lead of your puppy and continue to lead your puppy beyond the boundary. Shock him and ride back to the house if your puppy bumps into or falls through the line. Love again and let him play. Repeat the exercise until it reveals itself to be restrained.

The final move is to look closely at the puppy when a jogger or another puppy runs by while the puppy is on his long lead outside.
